Student travelers and their parents met in Gorrie 227 at 5:30 PM to meet trip faculty and learn about the Study Abroad Down Under trip. Professors Anoop Sattineni, Michael Hein and Karen Rogers reviewed the purpose, goals, and guidelines of the Study Abroad Down Under trip. Parents were introduced to the trip blog and invited to follow us on our journey by observing and participating on the blog. There was a question and answer period followed by a great BBQ dinner.
A recap of some of the Q&A:
- Money
- Carry both credit card and debit cards.
- Use debit card only at ATM's in well lit public spaces.
- Use credit card only or cash for purchases.
- Contact card issuing banks before leaving to let them know when and where you will be traveling and using your card.
- Cary a paper copy (photocopy) of your card information in case your card is lost or stolen.
- Plan on about $2,000 US for food and miscellaneous expenses
- Packing
- Travel light - take only what you need.
- You can purchase anything in AUS and NZ that you can in US.
- You will have to pay for check-on luggage on foreign flights.
- Bring an AUS/NZ adapter plug or two to charge your electric deices. You will need a converter for appliances like hair dryer.
- Free Travel
- You must travel with at least one buddy from our group anywhere you go. (AU SA rule)
- Plan ahead and book flights ASAP to save money.
- Communication
- Purchase an unlocked GSM phone to take with you. We will provide you with a SIM card in both AUS and NZ.
- You can can get free calls into your phone from parents, friends, etc.
- Skype is a great free way to video call from abroad.
- Medications
- Carry a letter from your Physician with your prescription(s) in case you loose your medications.
